Launched recently is the Amara Heritage Trail, the latest activity you can explore in Sentosa Island, right at the ground of Amara Sanctuary Resort, tastefully restored colonial-style architecture and grounds, amidst tranquil garden settings, and breathtaking sea views.
It’s an award-winning resort in Sentosa, Singapore, built on a site of a former British military barracks from the 1930s. The resort has successfully conserved and restored the colonial era, while preserving part of the nature that surrounds the resort in its beautifully manicured 10-acre landscape. The resort was used to be the home to old soldier quarters and the last World War II air raid shelters are one of the highlights of the trail.
The Amara Heritage Trail is opened to resort guests and non-guests. It’s a tour to discover the nature, conservation and history hidden within the resort and history of Sentosa. This trail explores World War II-related sites and stories, and provides a glimpse of the lives of the British soldiers.
One of the things that I’ve learned during the guided tour is how the island was named “Sentosa”, a Malay for “Peace and Tranquility”. Surprisingly, some of the locals who’ve joined the tour doesn’t know either.
It’s a 60 mins relaxing and informative walking guided tour that includes 11 different stations to explore within the resort. I am just going to share a glimpse of what the trail looks like and some important information below.
Ist Station – Kacang Putih
We get to try the locals childhood favorite snacks. Over the years, a large variety of tidbits have been added to the distinctive crunchy mix that characterizes the Kacang Putih’s nostalgic taste.
2nd Station – Petai Tree
3rd Station – Saga Tree
4th Station – Blakang Mati
5th Station – Courtyard & Verandah Suites
CAN YOU SPOT THE DIFFERENCE?
BRITISH ARMY SOLE CLEANER
6th Station – Air Raid Shelter
Back then, the air raid shelters were designated only for government and military officials, and their families. Today, there’s an air raid shelter in every housing home in Singapore.
7th Station – Carlton Walk
8th Station – Larkhill Terrace
9th Station – Herb Garden
10th Station – Sky Pool
Swipe it to watch few video clips.
While at the sky pool, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Straits of Singapore and the South China Sea.
11th Station – Peacocks & The Sacred Tree
The free roaming of peacocks were a unique heritage feature. In 1992, 2 pairs of peacocks were introduced to Sentosa to add variety to its wildlife and to complement its rustic feel. Today, there are more than 150 peacocks on the island.
After the trail, you can opt to enjoy a Amara Heritage Trail Colonial Set Menu for lunch.
The Colonial Set Menu is priced at S$38++ for 2 person
