If you love thai food then this is something that will get you excited. And if you don’t then you have to see this authentic Northeastern cuisine for your dose of yummy thai food and be acquainted.
My first impression was, “Oh a Thai Café in block 115?” I wondered for a while why I didn’t discover this place when I used to live in Aljunied for more than 2 years. It’s just few minutes away from my block and very near to Aljunied swimming complex where I used to swim. That’s right! Spicy Thai Thai Café is located in HDB area, away from crowded malls. Its 15 minutes walk from Aljunied MRT.
It’s a steamboat Mookata, BBQ and ala carte. Hooooray! All under one roof. They have tables inside the café and outside with flourishing garden. We choose to eat outside so we get to enjoy the feeling of nature while eating.
The moment I saw all the food being served, the thai food monsters in me shouted “WOW” with a roar and wide eyes. It’s just me exaggerating my excitement to eat, not because I was hungry (liar..heheh! ) it’s because some very new dishes to me are being served and in big sizes.
After the fest with fellow hungry blogger friends, I’ve realized that I have not eaten yet the best thai food. I just got familiar with top thai food dishes like Pineapple Fried Rice, Tom Yum Soup, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Pad Thai Noodles, Green Chicken Curry and etcetera.
I had a little chitchat with Mr. Poh, the owner of the café. I felt his passion towards thai food. Before the restaurant was put up, he used to stay and travel a lot around Thailand, including the secluded areas where he learned some interesting dishes which he also incorporated in the cafe’s menu. He is very detailed with his dishes and ingredients they use. The squid they served is Japanese squid, as it is known to be tastier. Even the tea leaves are imported from Thailand. So, that makes Spicy Thai Thai café uniquely yummy.
Northeastern is a must try food. They have spicy and non-spicy dishes too. Here’s what we had for dinner and catch my top three favorites.
FISH MAW CRAB MEAT ABALONE SOUP IN COCONUT AT S$28
This is my first favorite. A heavenly soup. I liked that it’s tasteful and the thickness of the soup is just right with the hint of coconut and a bit of sour. It’s very generous with ingredients, such as abalone, mushrooms, fish maw, crab meat & coconut. Must Try!
DEEP FRIED SEA BASS WITH MANGO SALAD AT S$18
Surprisingly, it’s not oily. They had drained the oil properly that you cannot even notice or taste it. The fish is perfectly fried. It is crispy outside and soft inside. What makes it really different is that it’s paired with mango salad.
BBQ SQUID & SQUID ROE (seasonal price)
You can distinguished that the squid is not the ordinary type as the taste is sweeter and it’s tender. Truly, it’s a good quality Japanese squid. Another BBQ that was served, “Pork Belly BBQ” at S$18.
DEEP FRIED KANGKONG WITH SPECIAL THAI SAUCE AT S$10
My second favorite, it’s perfectly crisp and best paired with special Thai sauce. I kept on eating this, I didn’t even bother if others already eaten — hahah!
THAI STYLE CURRY CRAB (seasonal price)
I’m not into curry food but, I did taste a bit. The sauce is creamy and spicy. And having seen the group enjoyed and finished the entire big crab, I can say that it’s yummy for people who loves to eat dishes in curry sauce.
LARB MOO TOK AT S$12
This is my third favorite. This is very spicy meat balls and it’s seasoned to be a bit salty so it would perfectly match with the raw vegetable sides of long beans and cabbage. At first, I was hesitant to eat the raw long beans but Mr. Poh (the owner) convinced me to try. He was right! (well, how can the brain behind the menu be wrong? 😉 ) This spicy meat balls are perfectly eaten with raw veggies, a lot better than white rice. Must Try!
THAI WALKING CATFISH WITH SPICY LEMON SOUP AT S$35
I’m not really sure why it’s called walking catfish when it’s not walking at all — hahah! Kidding aside, the taste is quite different from the usual steam fish, probably because it is served with flaming charcoal to keep it hot. And sided with additional lemon soup that you can add in anytime you want. The fish is soft and tasty.
HOMMOK THAI STYLE OTAK S$18
If you like Otak, then this is a sure hit. It’s very flavorful, sweet and spicy. Otak in coconut shell, how presentable it is.
LALA BEE HOON AT S$18
I’m not a Bee Hoon type of person but I found myself keeps on eating this dish. It’s generously mixed with cockles and it’s a bit spicy.
